As JR East began introducing the E231 series to its lines in the Tokyo metropolitan area, the 205 series, which had been the mainstay of commuter trains, was reassigned to other lines. In 2004, many 205 series trains were also transferred to the Nambu Line, which connects Kawasaki and Tachikawa.
